Pioneering the evolution of Kenyan benga music from the 1970s onward, D. O. Misiani transformed the genre with his innovative guitar work and socially conscious lyrics that spoke to everyday struggles and triumphs across East Africa. As the founder and leader of Shirati Jazz, one of the continent's most influential dance orchestras, Misiani created a distinctive sound that blended traditional Luo rhythms with modern instrumentation, influencing generations of musicians and cementing benga's place in African popular music.
